Minimum CIBIL score for a personal loan: our guidance and what else we check
Last updated:
No lender has a universal minimum CIBIL score for a personal loan. At Piramal Finance, we assess your credit profile, income and other eligibility factors when reviewing an application. A lower score may limit your options or lead to higher interest rates. Improving your score before applying may help reduce borrowing costs. But a good score does not guarantee approval. Lenders also check your income, existing debts, and age.
Minimum CIBIL score for a personal loan: What you need to know
Most borrowers wonder what CIBIL score they need to apply for a personal loan. The answer is simple: there is no universal number. Lenders in India do look for a certain threshold, but loan approval depends on several other criteria and the lender’s sole discretion.
For our Instant Personal Loan, eligibility depends on your credit profile and the other applicable requirements.
More broadly, CIBIL states a score above 700 is generally considered good, and many lenders view applicants with a score over 700 as low-risk borrowers. However, this general guidance does not guarantee approval.
The lender’s credit policy makes the final decision. Lenders also weigh your income, existing debts, repayment history, employment status and age alongside your score.
Knowing the CIBIL score required for personal loan eligibility is the first step, but your overall financial profile determines the final outcome.

What Is a CIBIL Score and How Is It Calculated?
India has 4 RBI-licensed credit bureaus. They are TransUnion CIBIL, Experian, CRIF High Mark, and Equifax. The RBI monitors all credit bureaus. Each bureau uses its own proprietary algorithms and scoring models. As a result, your credit score may vary across bureaus. Lenders use your credit score as a key factor when evaluating credit applications and assessing your credit risk profile.
Your CIBIL Score is a three-digit number ranging from 300 to 900 that summarises your personal credit history. The closer you are to 900, the better your CIBIL score. It is generated from the information in your Credit Information Report (CIR), particularly your credit accounts and recent enquiries.
CIBIL considers factors such as your repayment history, credit utilisation, length of credit history and recent credit enquiries when calculating the score. A score above 700 is generally considered good, while lenders may prefer higher scores for some credit products. Your report also records enquiries lenders make when you apply for loans or credit cards. You can access one free full CIBIL report, including your score, from the bureau each calendar year.

What Factors Affect Your CIBIL Score?
Some factors that have a direct impact on your credit score are:
- Repayment history: Your record of paying EMIs and credit card dues on time is a key factor in your score. A missed payment has the potential to cause you to lose points from your existing CIBIL score.
- Credit utilisation: The proportion of your available credit that you use affects how lenders view your credit behaviour. CIBIL recommends keeping it under 30% of the available credit limit.
- Length of credit history: A longer track record gives lenders more information about how you have managed credit.
- Recent enquiries: Multiple recent credit applications can temporarily affect your score, and lenders may also see you as credit-dependent.
- Credit mix: A balanced mix of secured credit, like a car loan or gold loan, and unsecured credit, like credit cards or personal loans, may increase your CIBIL score over time.
Note: TransUnion CIBIL calculates this score using the Accounts and Enquiries sections of your credit report. Four main factors feed into the proprietary formula: your on-time payment history, how much of the credit limits you use, the length of your credit history, and recent loan applications. The exact weight of each factor is not public.
CIBIL Score Range for Personal Loan: Approval Odds and Rate Impact
A higher CIBIL Score generally indicates a stronger credit profile, but the score alone does not determine whether a personal loan will be approved or what rate you will receive. The bands below provide general educational guidance on how score ranges may be viewed; they do not represent our loan eligibility criteria.
| CIBIL Score | Rating | What it may mean for a personal loan |
|---|---|---|
| 750–900 | Excellent | Strong credit profile. Approval and terms depend on the lender’s wider assessment. |
| 700–749 | Good | Generally viewed as a lower-risk range, although individual lenders may apply different eligibility criteria. |
| 650–699 | Good | Indicates a reasonably strong profile, but approval and terms depend on the lender’s wider assessment. |
| 550–649 | Fair | Borrowing options may be more limited, with lenders placing greater weight on income, repayment history, and other eligibility factors. |
| 300–549 | Poor | A loan may be harder to obtain, as lenders may apply stricter eligibility requirements or decline the application. |
If your report shows NA or NH, it means you have no credit history, or it is insufficient for a score.
Your CIBIL Score can influence the lender’s assessment, but no universal rate premium is attached to each score band. For the same loan tenure, the rate offered can vary based on factors including bureau performance, repayment history and cash flows.
Note: These bands are indicative. A score in any band does not guarantee loan approval, as the lender still conducts a full eligibility assessment. Loan approval is at the sole discretion of the lender.
Our Instant Personal Loan Criteria
The loan amount ranges from ₹50,000 to ₹25 lakh, with repayment terms of 9 to 60 months. The interest rate starts at 12.14% per annum, and the processing fee can be up to 5% of the loan amount plus applicable taxes.
Other eligibility requirements include:

- Salaried applicants: Minimum monthly income of ₹25,000 is required.
- Self-employed applicants: Minimum annual income of ₹3 lakh is required.
- Application: The process starts with mobile number verification through OTP, followed by PAN verification.
Your CIBIL Score is one part of our assessment, but a good score alone does not guarantee approval. We also consider other eligibility requirements and the information you provide during the application.

The Hard-Inquiry Risk: How Multiple Loan Applications Affect Your Score
Before submitting multiple loan applications, understand how lender enquiries can affect your CIBIL score. Checking your own score through our free tool is a soft enquiry and does not affect your CIBIL score. However, a formal loan application can trigger a hard enquiry, which may have a marginal impact on your score.
- Soft enquiry: Checking your own CIBIL score does not affect your score.
- Hard enquiry: When you apply for a loan, the lender may access your credit report, resulting in a hard enquiry that can marginally affect your score.
- Multiple loan applications: Applying to several lenders within a short period can negatively impact your CIBIL score. Therefore, avoid submitting applications to multiple lenders at once.
- Monitor enquiries: Each enquiry remains on your credit report for 36 months. The bureau must also send you an SMS or email alert when a lender’s enquiry appears in your credit report, provided your contact details are available.
Check your eligibility first and apply only to lenders that match your profile. Focusing on one application at a time can help you avoid unnecessary hard enquiries.

Note: The impact of a hard enquiry can vary based on your individual credit profile and the lender’s credit assessment.
Can You Get a Personal Loan Without a CIBIL Score?
You may be able to get a personal loan without a CIBIL score, although your options may be more limited. Some fintechs and NBFCs may consider alternative information, such as salary slips, bank statements, and UPI transaction history, when assessing your application.
- Small loan amounts: First-time or thin-file borrowers may qualify for smaller personal loans, potentially up to ₹50,000, based on their income and other financial information.
- Higher borrowing costs: Without an established credit history, lenders may charge higher interest rates and offer shorter repayment tenures to offset the additional risk.
- Build your credit history: If your CIBIL report shows ‘NH’ or ‘-1’, start with a small credit card or a secured credit card. Make every payment on time and keep utilisation low.
- Graduate gradually: After building a consistent repayment record for around 6–12 months, you may have more options for accessing larger forms of credit.
A no-CIBIL-score personal loan may be possible, but building a strong credit history can improve your borrowing options and terms over time.
Note: Loan eligibility, amount, interest rate and tenure vary by lender and individual profile. An ‘NH’ or ‘-1’ status does not guarantee loan approval.

Frequently Asked Questions
We assess your credit profile along with your income, existing obligations, and other eligibility requirements. A good score alone does not guarantee approval.
A score alone cannot establish your eligibility. Please confirm the applicable eligibility criteria for the specific personal loan before applying. We also assess your income, existing debts and repayment history.
A ‘No Hit’ means there is not enough credit history to generate a score. To build a credit record, start with small amounts or low limits and repay on time.
Under our risk policy, your interest rate may vary based on factors such as your repayment track record, debt-to-income ratio, and cash flow. A lower debt-to-income ratio can increase your eligibility.
CIBIL scores run from 300 to 900. CIBIL itself states a score above 700 is generally considered good. We classify 650–749 as good and 750–900 as excellent. These are educational bands, not our personal-loan eligibility cutoffs.
A lower score may limit your borrowing options. Our lending decision depends on your overall credit profile and applicable eligibility requirements. Check these before applying.
