Gold loan basics

What is a Gold Loan?

A Gold Loan is a secured loan in which you pledge eligible gold jewellery or gold coins as security to a lender and receive funds against the assessed value of the gold.

Unlike selling your gold, a Gold Loan allows you to use the value of your gold while retaining ownership of it, subject to the terms of the loan. Your gold remains pledged with the lender until you repay the applicable outstanding amount and complete the loan closure process.

The amount you can borrow depends on factors such as the purity and net weight of the eligible gold, the applicable gold rate, the Loan-to-Value (LTV) applicable to the loan and your eligibility.

With Piramal Finance, the gold is weighed and purity-tested in front of you, as part of the valuation process. The eligible loan amount is then determined based on the assessed value of the gold and the applicable terms.

Why do people take a Gold Loan?

A loan against gold can be used to meet a range of financial requirements, subject to the terms of the loan. Customers may consider a Gold Loan for needs such as:

  • ✓Business or working capital requirements
  • ✓Education expenses
  • ✓Medical or emergency expenses
  • ✓Household or personal financial needs
  • ✓Other eligible financial requirements

A Gold Loan can provide access to funds without requiring you to sell your gold jewellery.

Valuation

How is Gold Valued for a Gold Loan?

Gold valuation is one of the most important factors in determining how much you can borrow against your gold.

The value of your gold is generally determined by considering:

  • ✓Gold purity: The karat of the gold affects its value.
  • ✓Net gold weight: The eligible gold content is considered rather than simply the total weight of the jewellery.
  • ✓Applicable gold rate: The relevant gold rate used for valuation is considered.
  • ✓Eligible gold: The jewellery or gold coins must meet the lender’s applicable requirements.
  • ✓Loan-to-Value (LTV): The applicable LTV determines the portion of the assessed gold value that can be offered as a loan.

Does jewellery weight equal gold value?

Not necessarily. Jewellery may contain stones, other materials or components that are not counted as gold. Therefore, the eligible gold value is based on the applicable assessment of the gold content rather than simply the gross weight of the jewellery.

How is gold purity checked?

The gold is assessed for purity as part of the valuation process. The applicable purity and net eligible gold weight are then considered along with the relevant gold rate to determine the assessed value.

Why does gold purity matter?

Gold purity indicates the proportion of gold in the item. For example, 22K gold contains a higher proportion of gold than lower-karat gold. Since purity affects the eligible gold value, it can also affect the loan amount you may be eligible for.

Loan-to-Value

What is Gold Loan LTV?

Gold Loan LTV, or Loan-to-Value ratio, is the percentage of the assessed value of your pledged gold that can be offered as a loan. The applicable LTV is determined based on regulatory guidelines and the lender’s prevailing policies.

It represents the ratio between the loan amount and the assessed value of the gold pledged as security.

Gold Loan LTV Formula

LTV = Loan Amount ÷ Assessed Value of Gold × 100

For example, if the assessed value of eligible gold is ₹4,00,000 and the applicable LTV is 75%, the loan amount at that LTV would be up to ₹3,00,000, subject to applicable eligibility and loan terms.

The applicable Gold Loan LTV is determined according to regulatory requirements and the lender’s prevailing policies.

Why is LTV important for a Gold Loan?

LTV helps determine how much you can borrow against your gold.

Two customers with gold of the same gross weight may not necessarily receive the same loan amount because the final eligible amount can depend on:

  • ✓Gold purity
  • ✓Net eligible gold weight
  • ✓Applicable gold rate
  • ✓Assessed gold value
  • ✓Applicable LTV
  • ✓Loan scheme and eligibility

What does 75% LTV mean?

If an applicable LTV of 75% is used, the eligible loan amount can be up to 75% of the assessed value of the eligible gold, subject to applicable regulatory requirements, lender policies and eligibility.

The applicable LTV may vary based on the loan amount and prevailing policy. Always check the applicable terms at the time of application.

Loan amount

How Much Gold Loan Can You Get?

The amount you can get against your gold depends on the assessed value of the eligible gold and the applicable LTV.

Piramal Finance offers Gold Loans from ₹25,000 up to ₹50 lakh*, subject to eligibility, applicable LTV, gold valuation and prevailing terms.

Your eligible loan amount may depend on:

  • ✓Gold purity: Higher-purity eligible gold can have a higher assessed value than lower-purity gold of the same weight.
  • ✓Net gold weight: The eligible gold content is considered during valuation. Stones and other non-gold components may not be included in the eligible gold weight.
  • ✓Gold rate: The applicable gold rate used for valuation affects the assessed value of your gold.
  • ✓Applicable LTV: The applicable Loan-to-Value determines the maximum loan amount that can be offered against the assessed value.
  • ✓Your loan eligibility: Your age, KYC and other applicable eligibility requirements also need to be satisfied.

Example

Suppose your eligible gold has an assessed value of ₹5,00,000 and the applicable LTV is 75%.

Indicative loan amount = ₹5,00,000 × 75% = ₹3,75,000

The actual sanctioned amount can differ based on physical gold valuation, applicable LTV, eligibility, scheme and prevailing policies.

What Gold Can You Pledge for a Gold Loan?

Gold jewellery

Eligible gold jewellery and ornaments may include items such as:

Gold coins

Only bank-minted gold coins may be accepted subject to applicable limits and requirements.

What is not included in the gold value?

Non-gold components such as stones may not be counted as eligible gold during valuation.

The final eligibility of the gold is determined after physical inspection and purity assessment at the branch.
