Every CIBIL score is a credit score — but not every credit score is a CIBIL score. Here is what each term covers.
Credit score
A 3-digit summary of your credit history that lets lenders assess your credit profile before approving credit cards or loans. It can be issued by any of the 4 RBI-licensed credit bureaus.

What Is a Credit Score?
A credit score summarises your entire credit profile. It is a number that helps financial institutions assess your credit applications. India has 4 RBI-licensed credit bureaus that can generate credit scores: Experian, Equifax, CRIF High Mark and TransUnion CIBIL.
All four bureaus calculate credit scores based on information from banks and other financial companies. Each of these credit bureaus uses a proprietary algorithm and scoring methods, so credit scores vary across them despite using the same source of information.

Note: Credit scores vary across bureaus because each uses a proprietary algorithm and scoring method, even though they draw on the same source of information. Learn more about credit bureaus in India.
What Is a CIBIL Score?
A CIBIL score is a credit score calculated by TransUnion CIBIL. This number indicates your creditworthiness and demonstrates your ability to repay a loan. While most financial institutions may consider a 750+ score as a good score, the CIBIL website states that the closer your score is to 900, the higher the chances of you getting your loan or a credit card.
Often, people use ‘CIBIL score’ to mean any credit score; the term technically refers to the score generated by TransUnion CIBIL. It is imperative to note that all CIBIL scores are credit scores, but not all credit scores are CIBIL scores.
Credit Score vs CIBIL Score: Key Differences at a Glance
The terms credit score vs CIBIL score are often used interchangeably but are distinctly different from each other. The table below highlights the difference between the two.

These distinct factors help determine the difference between CIBIL score and credit score.
What Do Different Score Bands Mean for Your Loan?
There is no single credit score band that can guarantee loan approval. However, your score can influence how lenders view your credit profile.
| Score band | What it may mean for your loan |
|---|---|
| 300 – 649 | A lower score may make loan approval more difficult or result in stricter lending terms. |
| 650 – 699 | You may still qualify with some lenders, depending on your overall financial profile and other eligibility criteria like income, current financial liabilities, etc. |
| 700 – 749 | This score is acceptable to most banks and NBFCs and they may approve your loan as per your entire credit profile. |
| 750 – 799 | A 750 credit score is generally viewed favourably and may strengthen your loan application. |
| 800 – 900 | A higher score indicates a stronger credit profile. Financial institutions may view this band as low-risk, offering borrowers competitive interest rates and better borrowing terms. |
Note: While 900 is the maximum credit score, the closer you are to it, the higher the chances of loan approvals. A high credit score does not guarantee approvals. Lenders assess several other criteria, such as income stability, current debt-to-income ratio, age, and other important factors.
CIBIL Score vs CIBIL Report: Two Different Things
While your CIBIL score and CIBIL report are a part of your credit profile, they are not the same. The CIBIL score is a three-digit summary of your credit history, while the report provides the detailed information behind it.
CIBIL score
A three-digit summary of your credit history. The score is calculated using information in the Accounts and Enquiries sections of the report.
CIBIL report
More detailed; it includes personal information, credit accounts, repayment history, credit utilisation and recent credit enquiries.
Note: The RBI requires every CIC to provide one free, full credit report to eligible individuals each calendar year.

Frequently Asked Questions
A score of 750 or above is generally considered good and can strengthen your credit profile. However, financial institutions may have different eligibility criteria when assessing a loan or credit card application. Factors like income, existing debt, and repayment history may also influence the final approvals.
A 700 CIBIL score may be seen favourably and considered for approvals. Financial institutions also consider several factors, such as current income, salaried or self-employed status, and existing financial liabilities, before offering interest rates and repayment terms. These rates and terms may also vary between banks and NBFCs.
You can check your credit score through the official websites of the four RBI-licensed credit bureaus. You generally need to provide basic identification details and complete verification. All 4 credit bureaus offer a free annual credit report, subject to applicable rules.
A 700 CIBIL score does not guarantee loan approval, but it may meet the credit score requirements. The final approval depends on your complete financial profile like income, debt and eligibility criteria of the specific lender.
Having no CIBIL score does not necessarily mean you cannot get a loan or apply for a credit card. Financial institutions consider additional criteria when evaluating loan applications with little to no credit history. Lenders could seek guarantors, co-applicants, and detailed documentation, with stricter borrowing terms.
