How Do Credit Bureaus Collect and Update Your Financial Data?

Credit bureaus build your profile from lender-reported activity and additional financial signals.

1

RBI-mandated reporting

Banks and NBFCs report credit and repayment information every 15 days, including credit card repayments, loans and new applications.

2

Additional data sources

Bureaus may also obtain information from income tax records and utility bill payments to assess creditworthiness.

3

Profile creation

A profile is created detailing your credit behaviour, repayment and default history, debt-to-income ratio and other factors.

4

Report & score compilation

This information is compiled into a credit report and summarised into a credit score, accessible by lenders upon your consent.

How Long Do Negative Entries Stay on Your Credit Bureau Record?

Up to 7 years

Credit information typically remains on your credit bureau record for 7 years.

Defaults: about 3 years

Default payments may remain for 3 years and are often reflected as Days Past Due (DPD).

Note: Negative entries can lower your score and affect loan terms, so monitoring your report regularly is important.

How to Dispute and Remove an Incorrect Entry from Your Credit Bureau Report?

Credit bureaus are also responsible for rectifying credit bureau report errors. Follow these steps:

1

Get your report

Obtain your latest credit report from the credit bureau’s official website.

2

Review for errors

Review the report, identify any errors and note them down.

3

Fill dispute form

Fill out the online dispute form available on the credit bureau’s website.

4

Submit documents

Submit the form with supporting documents for investigation.

Note: Each credit bureau has its own dispute portal. Disputes must be raised directly with the respective bureau where the error appears. Investigation and rectification may take 35–40 days.
