Minimum CIBIL score for an MSME loan: whose score, what Piramal Finance publishes, and routes if yours is low
Last updated:
No single minimum CIBIL score guarantees an MSME loan, as lenders set their own policies. At Piramal Finance, we assess applications based on the applicant’s credit profile, repayment capacity and our lending policy. A credit score alone does not guarantee approval, and we recommend checking your score before applying for new credit products.
What Is an MSME Loan?
An MSME loan helps Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises meet their business funding needs. Businesses can use these loans for working capital, purchasing equipment, expanding operations, managing cash flow or other business expenses.
MSME loans may be available to manufacturers, traders, service providers, sole proprietors, partnerships, LLPs and private limited companies, subject to the lender’s eligibility criteria. An MSME loan is a type of business loan, but a business loan is a broader term that covers different forms of business financing.
When you apply for a loan, financial institutions may check your credit information with one or more RBI-licensed credit information companies, including TransUnion CIBIL, Experian, Equifax and CRIF High Mark.
TransUnion CIBIL provides credit information for consumers and businesses. Its CIBIL Score for individuals ranges from 300 to 900, with 900 being the highest. For commercial and MSME credit, CIBIL uses a different CIBIL Rank, ranging from 1 to 10, where 1 is the highest rank and 10 is the lowest.

What Is a CIBIL Score and Why Does It Matter for MSME Loans?
A CIBIL score is a three-digit number between 300 and 900 that reflects your credit history and repayment behaviour. For an MSME loan, lenders may look at both your personal and business credit profile.
- Promoter’s CIBIL score: Lenders may check the business owner’s or promoter’s personal CIBIL score when assessing an MSME loan application.
- Business credit profile: For registered businesses such as Pvt Ltd companies and LLPs, lenders may also consider the company’s credit report.
- Sole proprietors: For a sole proprietorship, the owner’s personal CIBIL score is generally the primary credit signal.
- Why it matters: A higher credit score can strengthen your loan application, but no single CIBIL score guarantees MSME loan approval.
- Lender-specific criteria: Each lender sets its own eligibility requirements. At Piramal Finance, we assess the applicant’s overall credit profile and repayment capacity, subject to our lending policy.
Check your CIBIL score before applying to understand your credit position and choose your next step accordingly.
Note: Loan approval depends on multiple factors, including income, business profile, repayment capacity and the lender’s credit policy. Final loan approvals are at the sole discretion of the lender and their internal policies.
What Counts as an MSME, and What Credit Information Do Lenders Check?
Under the Ministry of MSMEs’ guidance, your enterprise’s MSME classification depends on its investment in plant and machinery or equipment and annual turnover. From 1 April 2025, the limits are:
| Category | Investment | Annual turnover |
|---|---|---|
| Micro | Up to ₹2.5 crore | Up to ₹10 crore |
| Small | Up to ₹25 crore | Up to ₹100 crore |
| Medium | Up to ₹125 crore | Up to ₹500 crore |
Registration on the Udyam portal is voluntary. However, it can provide practical benefits. For example, eligible micro and small enterprises with a valid, verified Udyam Registration Certificate may avoid prepayment or foreclosure charges on certain floating-rate loans sanctioned from 1 January 2026.
- MSME: For MSMEs, lenders typically check the CIBIL score for loan eligibility. Lenders may review different credit profiles based on the business structure.
- Sole proprietorship: The proprietor’s personal CIBIL Score is generally the primary credit signal.
- Pvt Ltd or Limited Liability Partnership: Lenders may check both the promoter’s personal CIBIL Score and the business’s CMR.
A strong business credit profile may support an application where the promoter’s personal score is borderline, depending on the lender.
Note: Loan approval depends on the lender’s policy and other factors, including income, business performance and repayment capacity.
Personal CIBIL Score and Business Credit Rank
There is no single minimum CIBIL score eligibility cut-off for an MSME loan. The score or credit profile a lender considers depends on your business structure and its own lending policy. Your personal CIBIL Score ranges from 300 to 900.
For businesses, lenders may also consider CIBIL Rank, which ranges from 10 to 1, with 1 being the best rank. The rank is based largely on repayment behaviour and credit utilisation and is available for businesses with credit exposure of up to ₹50 crore.
| Credit profile | What it means |
|---|---|
| Personal CIBIL Score | Lenders may consider the promoter’s score when assessing an MSME loan. |
| CIBIL Rank | 1 represents the best rank. CIBIL publishes availability for businesses with credit exposure of up to ₹50 crore. |
| MSME Rank (CMR) | CMR-1 to CMR-10, with CMR-1 representing the least risk. Enhanced CMR also covers smaller businesses with total credit exposure below ₹10 lakh. |
Not having a CIBIL Rank is not, by itself, considered a negative mark. Lenders may combine bureau information with other financial and business data when assessing your application.
See CIBIL’s company credit report and enhanced CIBIL MSME Rank announcement for a detailed understanding and coverage; these are not simply large-business and small-business categories.

Note: There is no universal “minimum CIBIL score” for MSME loans. Eligibility, interest rates, and loan amounts depend on the lender, product, business profile, and the borrowing party’s overall credit assessment.
Minimum CIBIL Score Required for an MSME Loan: Score Bands Explained
There is no universal minimum CIBIL score that applies to MSME loans. The table below gives an indicative view of how different CIBIL score ranges may affect your borrowing options. Actual eligibility depends on the lender, loan product and your overall credit profile.
| CIBIL score range | Indicative borrowing position |
|---|---|
| 750 and above | A stronger score may support your application, but it does not guarantee approval or particular loan terms. |
| 700–749 | Lenders assess this score alongside repayment capacity and your broader credit profile; it does not determine eligibility. |
| 650–699 | A lower score may constrain borrowing options. Approval, pricing and loan amounts depend on the lender’s assessment. |
| Below 650 | May make approval more difficult with many traditional lenders, although some lenders may consider applications based on other factors. |
Note: The table is indicative and does not represent Piramal Finance eligibility criteria or universal lender cut-offs. Lenders assess income, business performance, repayment capacity, bureau information and other factors. Read the latest terms and conditions before applying.

MSME Loan Interest Rates
- Our MSME loan rate starts at 17% per annum, while the final rate varies based on factors including the applicant’s credit profile and repayment capacity.
- For illustration, a ₹25 lakh loan over five years, repaid in 60 monthly reducing-balance instalments at a constant 17% annual rate, has an EMI of approximately ₹62,131.44 and total interest of ₹12.28 lakh. At 18%, the EMI is approximately ₹63,483.57 and total interest is ₹13.09 lakh. This excludes fees and assumes unchanged rates, regular monthly repayments and no prepayments. The amount is illustrative and does not state our MSME loan product limit.
Disclaimer: The starting rate stated here is current as of September 2026. Published rates may be revised by Piramal Finance in accordance with applicable policies and regulations. These calculations are indicative and do not constitute a loan offer. Your sanctioned amount, applicable rate and repayment terms will be confirmed in your loan documents.
Can You Get an MSME Loan Without a CIBIL Score?
You may be able to get an MSME loan without a personal CIBIL score, depending on your business profile, cash flows, and the lender’s policy. If you have no personal credit history, your report may show a No Hit or no-score result. This differs from a low score and from a business having no commercial rank. Acceptance of applicants with lower scores does not guarantee approval for those with no history.
Some options include:
- Government-backed Mudra loans: Under the Pradhan Mantri Mudra Yojana (PMMY), Shishu, Kishor and Tarun cover loans up to ₹10 lakh. Tarun Plus covers amounts above ₹10 lakh and up to ₹20 lakh only for entrepreneurs who have successfully repaid an earlier Tarun loan. These loans are collateral-free, but lenders still assess eligibility and creditworthiness; government backing does not guarantee approval or a lower score requirement.
- Secured loans: If you have eligible assets, a secured loan may provide another route, depending on the lender’s product and credit policy. Collateral does not guarantee approval or remove repayment-capacity checks. Check the specific product terms rather than assuming they match an unsecured MSME loan.
- Build a credit history: If borrowing is appropriate and affordable, consider a suitable entry-level credit product and repay it on time. Avoid taking on unnecessary debt just to build a score.
Note: Loan availability, pricing, collateral requirements and approval depend on the lender’s current criteria and your individual profile.

How to Improve Your CIBIL Score Before Applying for an MSME Loan
Check the lender’s eligibility criteria and other key factors, such as your CIBIL score, before applying for an MSME loan to avoid unnecessary applications and hard credit checks. Some practical tips include:
- Check your CIBIL Score for free using our credit-score tool.
- If you find errors in your CIBIL report, file a free correction complaint with the lender or bureau. Under the RBI compensation framework, an eligible complaint unresolved beyond 30 calendar days from its initial filing may qualify for ₹100 per calendar day of delay, subject to the framework’s conditions and exclusions.
- Keep your credit card dues and EMI repayments on time and consistent.
- Keep your credit utilisation under 30%, as CIBIL advises.
- Avoid applying to multiple lenders at once, as this can temporarily lower your score.
- If you have existing debt, clear it fully rather than settle it, as lenders view settlements negatively.
Consistent responsible behaviour may improve your credit profile over 3–6 months, but the timing varies by profile and reporting updates. A bureau refresh does not guarantee a score increase.

Lenders usually check the personal credit scores of the business owners or partners, especially for smaller entities like proprietorships. Lenders may also consider a separate score for the registered business, if one exists.
We assess the applicant’s credit profile, repayment capacity and other eligibility factors under our lending policy. A score alone does not determine approval or the final loan terms.
A personal No Hit or no-score result means we can’t find a personal score. This differs from a low score or a business with no commercial rank. Lenders may consider business financials and other documents, subject to their policies; neither situation guarantees approval or rejection.
No. Under PMMY, Shishu, Kishor, and Tarun cover loans up to ₹10 lakh, while Tarun Plus covers amounts above ₹10 lakh up to ₹20 lakh, only after successful repayment of an earlier Tarun loan. Lenders still assess eligibility and creditworthiness; there is no universal minimum score.
No, MSME registration is voluntary. However, having it can make you eligible for certain benefits and may be viewed favourably by some lenders during their assessment.
Consistent responsible financial behaviour may improve your credit profile over 3–6 months. The timing varies by profile, and no fixed number of CIBIL refresh cycles guarantees an increase.
