What Is a CIBIL Score and Why Does It Matter for Business Loans?

A CIBIL score is a 3-digit number ranging from 300 to 900. It reflects your overall credit profile, including repayment history, credit age, and other key credit factors. Most lenders use your credit score as a key factor when assessing your loan application. Financial institutions have different credit score thresholds for secured and unsecured credit.

Key Points for CIBIL Score for Business Loans

When you apply for a business or MSME loan, your CIBIL Score can influence how a lender views your ability to repay the loan. Remember, no single minimum score applies to all business loans. Each lender sets its own credit policy and considers the score alongside other financial and business information.

Here are some important points about our criteria and the credit information lenders consider.

  • Unsecured loans: We assess your credit profile alongside business performance, repayment capacity, and other eligibility criteria.
  • Secured loans: We consider the property offered as security, along with your credit profile and repayment capacity.
  • General score guidance: CIBIL generally considers a score above 700 to be good. We also consider it good. A score over 700 does not automatically mean loan approval.
  • Whose score matters? For a proprietorship, the proprietor’s personal CIBIL Score is typically an important part of the assessment. Your PAN is used to access your credit information.
  • Business credit profile: Businesses with formal credit exposure of up to ₹50 crore may have a CIBIL Rank on a 1–10 scale, where 1 is the best rank. MSMEs may also receive an MSME Rank on the same scale.

  • Overall assessment: We use bureau information alongside other sources when assessing credit risk. Factors such as Income, existing debt and age can also influence the lending decision.

The takeaway: Your personal credit history can carry significant weight as a small-business borrower, but the relevant CIBIL benchmark depends on the lender, loan type, and your overall financial profile.

Note: The guidance above does not guarantee loan approval. Check the lender’s current eligibility requirements before applying.

Minimum CIBIL Score Required for a Business Loan: Score Bands Explained

There is no universal minimum CIBIL score for a business loan. Lenders set their own criteria, so the same score can lead to different outcomes depending on the loan type, security, and application strength.

CIBIL ScoreBusiness loan profileLikely lending positionInterest-rate context
750+Strong credit profileBetter positioned for unsecured business loansA stronger credit profile may support more competitive terms, subject to the lender’s overall assessment.
700–749Good credit profileMay meet many lenders’ credit criteriaRate depends on the lender and the borrower’s overall credit profile. Interest rates may be negotiable
650–699Moderate credit profileSome lenders may consider the application, particularly where additional strengths support itMay attract different terms based on risk assessment. May have a higher interest rate
Below 650Higher credit riskOptions may be more limited; collateral, income and other strengths may become more importantBorrowers may face loan rejection. May need to provide a guarantor or additional documents, or seek a loan against assets.

Credit score is a key factor in our assessment, but approval also depends on eligibility and document verification. Our unsecured business loan ranges from ₹5 lakh to ₹30 lakh, with an interest rate of 16%–25% p.a. as of September 2026

Our Business Loan Criteria

  • Loan amount: ₹5 lakh to ₹30 lakh for an unsecured business loan.
  • Business Age: Your business must have been operational for at least four years.
  • Income tax returns: ITRs for the previous two years are required.
  • Bank statements: Provide six months of bank statements.
  • Interest rate: 16% to 25% per annum.
  • Processing fee: Up to 5% of the loan amount, plus applicable taxes.
  • Tenure: Up to 10 years.
  • Credit score: Your credit score is a key factor in our assessment.
  • Approval: Loan approval depends on meeting eligibility requirements and successfully verifying documents.
  • Final terms: Interest rates, fees and other terms may vary based on market conditions and your credit profile.

Note: A good credit score does not guarantee loan approval. Even with a strong credit score, an application may be declined due to insufficient income or repayment capacity and high existing debt obligations. Loan approvals are at the sole discretion of lenders and their internal policies.

If Your CIBIL Score Is Low or You Have None

A low or unavailable CIBIL Score can narrow your borrowing options, but it doesn’t necessarily end them. Depending on your requirement, you can consider secured financing or government-backed credit options.

  • Consider secured business financing: We offer secured business loans of up to ₹35 lakh against pledged assets. This can help when unsecured borrowing is difficult. This may be an option, subject to eligibility and assessment. Collateral doesn’t guarantee approval when unsecured borrowing is difficult.
  • Explore a loan against property: We offer loans against property from ₹35 lakh to ₹1.5 crore and above.
  • Consider a Mudra loan: Under the Pradhan Mantri Mudra Yojana (PMMY), banks, NBFCs, and microfinance institutions offer collateral-free loans of up to ₹20 lakh. The categories are Shishu, Kishore, Tarun and Tarun Plus. Loans above ₹10 lakh and up to ₹20 lakh fall under Tarun Plus, which is available to eligible borrowers who have successfully repaid an earlier Tarun loan.
  • If you have no credit history: Your CIBIL report may show “No Hit” when there is insufficient credit activity to generate a score.
  • For smaller funding needs: Our micro loan against property offers up to ₹15 lakh without requiring documented income proof. This doesn’t mean no documents or eligibility checks are required.

The right option depends on your borrowing requirement, available security, income and the lender’s eligibility criteria, not just your CIBIL Score. Select an option that aligns with your business goals without putting any additional financial pressure on you or your business.

Before You Apply: Four Things That Help

Before applying for a business loan, a few simple checks can help you present a stronger application and avoid preventable issues.

  • Check your CIBIL Report: Review your personal CIBIL Report before applying and verify that the information is accurate. CIBIL provides one free personal score and report per calendar year.
  • Dispute errors: If you find incorrect information, raise a dispute. The process is free. Credit-information complaints must be resolved within 30 calendar days of the initial filing with the lender or bureau.
  • Avoid multiple applications: Applying to several lenders at the same time can result in multiple enquiries and may lower your CIBIL Score.
  • Clear overdue amounts: If you have an old overdue account, paying the full outstanding amount is better than settling for less. A “settled” status can signal that you didn’t fully repay the debt.

A clean, accurate credit report and consistent repayment behaviour can put you in a stronger position when you apply for a business loan.

Frequently Asked Questions

The final decision rests with each lender’s policy, not the bureau. CIBIL states a score above 700 is generally considered good.

We can’t determine approval from the score alone. Some lenders may consider secured borrowing, but the decision also depends on repayment capacity, the property offered as security and other eligibility criteria.

Our unsecured business loan offers amounts from ₹5 lakh to ₹30 lakh, subject to eligibility and credit assessment. For larger needs, our loan against property can go from ₹35 lakh to ₹1.5 crore and above.

You can also explore a government-backed option. Under the Pradhan Mantri Mudra Yojana (PMMY), banks and other institutions offer collateral-free loans up to ₹20 lakh. Your eligibility will depend on the lender’s assessment of your business. Loans above ₹10 lakh and up to ₹20 lakh fall under Tarun Plus and require successful repayment of a previous Tarun loan, along with the lender’s eligibility assessment.

A “No Hit” means CIBIL does not have enough credit activity in your name to generate a score. In this case, lenders will rely on other criteria, such as business vintage. Our requirement is at least four years.

As of September 2026, unsecured business loan rates range from 16% to 25% per annum. The rate you receive depends on our assessment of your overall application, including your credit score and business health.
